Tim VanValkenberg
Pilot and Commercial Aircraft Expert Witness
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Timothy P. VanValkenburg is an aviation professional with more than four decades of experience spanning airline operations, aircraft maintenance, regulatory oversight, and aviation safety. A retired airline captain with approximately 14,000 flight hours, he has extensive operational experience across multiple turbine aircraft platforms including Airbus A319/A320, Boeing 737NG, Boeing 757/767, and Boeing 727. In addition to large transport-category aircraft. Mr. VanValkenburg has operational experience across a wide spectrum of general aviation aircraft, including numerous single-engine piston aircraft as well as single- and multi-engine turboprop aircraft, providing broad operational insight spanning both airline and general aviation flight environments.
Mr. VanValkenburg holds an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate and maintains a current FAA First Class Medical. In addition to his flight credentials, he is also a certificated Aircraft Mechanic holding an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P;) certificate, providing a unique combination of operational flight expertise and hands-on technical maintenance knowledge.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Maintenance Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, with additional studies in aeronautical engineering. He has also completed specialized training in aircraft accident investigation.
Mr. VanValkenburg completed accident investigation training through programs associated with the Air Line Pilots Association and the University of Southern California aviation safety programs.
Mr. VanValkenburg recently served as a Federal Aviation Administration Aviation Safety Inspector Flight Operations, where he oversaw regulatory compliance, operational standards, and safety programs for complex airline fleets. His responsibilities included evaluation of airline training programs, operational procedures, and compliance with federal aviation regulations.
Because of his combined experience in flight operations, aircraft maintenance, regulatory oversight, and accident investigation, Mr. VanValkenburg provides expert analysis in aviation safety, airline operations, pilot decision-making, aircraft systems, maintenance practices, regulatory compliance, and industry standard-of-care across both commercial and general aviation environments. His background as both an Airline Transport Pilot and certificated Aircraft Mechanic (A&P;), combined with extensive experience in large transport aircraft as well as general aviation piston and turboprop operations, provides a comprehensive perspective on the operational, technical, and regulatory factors that influence aviation safety and aircraft airworthiness. He is particularly qualified to analyze the interaction between pilot actions, aircraft systems, and maintenance practices when determining accident causation and aviation standard-of-care.
